I wasn't expecting much, but when I opened up the kit, the brushes, ink well, brush stands and ink smear were stunning. I'm also so happy it came with the xuan paper. I painted this gift for someone who was mentoring me.

Overall, I recommend this set. I looked at pages of them on Amazon and other sites, but ultimately chose this one for the aesthetics and included items - all at a very competitive price (I see it has increased a bit since). I agree with other reviewers that directions would have been nice. It looks exactly as pictured - I really like the bamboo design on the ink stone - and includes a pamphlet of Chinese characters. All the brushes are different (short and long of light and dark). I intend to store a tin of red ink cushioned inside the ink stone and a dropper to the case. The seal I already have and flannel won't fit inside, but then it will be a complete set. Sorry I haven't used it yet so I can't speak to how well it actually works, but I am guessing it's average based on the workmanship. There are minor imperfections that give it away. For instance, the case feels like cardboard with fabric that's glued on and slightly rippled. The paper is bent from being folded to fit. Similarly, the magic cloth was wrinkled and had black marks. There were small chips in the ink stone and on some of the brushes. The "Gift For You" box arrived dented and ripped, but that's likely more a shipping issue. In short, it's the typical Chinese calligraphy gift set you see everywhere except for the price, I liked the design and combination of items included in this set best.

brushes were bigger than expected but surprisingly versatile for all both small and large character practices. the hair isn't too uniform but creates very good line variation to make your calligraphy look more expressive than a beginner is capable of.The rest of the kit all functions as expected with nothing feeling cheap. This is a great set at a great value (~30 bux) for beginners to figure out if Shodo or Chinese calligraphy is for them or not

Thus is such a beautiful set. With ceramic pieces to hold your brushes and two inkwells. The brushes, the paper the felt everything about this set say quality and beauty. Was a beautiful gift for my friend. She is enjoying the beauty of Japanese calligraphy and art

I was interested in picking up this new hobby, but this is not for complete beginners. I was expecting some directions and the package didn't have any. I had to YouTube and Google every little tool that was included. I didn't know how to use the stick or how to get ink from it, (turns out you just need water?) but a YouTube search helped. Will continue to use YouTube and Google. Product is only the necessary tools to start hobby, includes all tools, it seems, based off my research (lol). Teacher or internet needed. Not for dummies like me :)

Everything came as expected. The brushes are hardy and well-made, and the ink smells nice. I haven't done this kind of art in a long time, and the kit made me happy to come back to it.
