Love it
First, I have to say that when you come to the review part, the item may have been shipped from a completely different place as the reviewers before or after you, and used vs new, as well as different things included, etc. So I will review the product only. What I received, which may be different from what you ordered, is a used lens, with the two caps, and the hood. It works great. I bought a D3200, body only, and after a lot of review reading and browsing forums, this is the lens that I chose. It's a great step up from the kit lens, and it's on the cheaper end, especially buying used. The VR is vibration reduction, and it works great for me so far. I haven't had a chance to take very many shots yet, but I will share one or two photos I took with it. I am so glad I followed some advice and didn't buy a fancy bundle with my camera that had a kit lens and a bunch of other stuff. It's way cheaper this way and you get a great lens, which is to me, the most important part. All the other stuff you can grab later and get what you want instead of being forced into having extras you may never use that you paid for. Again, these were just quicky photos taken as I was slapping it all together. I haven't used a good camera since college about 14 years ago, so bear with me on settings. This is without a tripod, and with a noticeable shake to my hand. I'm really happy with this lens.

Great Lens!
Had the same lens attached to a Nikon D90. It is used in a photo booth among other things. The camera was dropped and in the process the lens broke. The lens came with the camera which I purchased in 2008. Works for close-up and zoom shots equally, meaning you get the best of both worlds for your typical needs. Other lens (which I have) are either close-up or for zoom shots only. With that being said, the camera now takes even better pictures than before, go figure. Lens is reasonably priced. Just put on the lens and the camera was ready to go. Pictures are awesome.

Good starter lens, but not at this price.
This lens has many positives going for it: it's light, has a great range that would cover most amature use, quiet, resonable AF speed, resonable image quality, and resonable light gathering with VR.It would be a perfect kit lens for the D40 (or Nikon's entry SLR line). The main problem is cost, at this price (about 330 to 400 new) I'd expect better optics, or higher durability (metal mount, less plastic), or both. The 18-55 lens and the 55-200 (either VR/non-VR) have better optics and are *much* cheaper. This lens really makes you wonder if you should just save more and get the 18-200 intead (a much better lens optically and durablity, but *heavy*)I do like this lens, it makes it much easier to just grab my camera and go. I just wish it were at the 200 to 250 price point.

Not an Authorized Nikon dealer so warranty is voided!
I purchased this lens May, 14, 2024. 6 months later is was not focusing off and on, it is now locking up when I turn the lens to zoom in and out. I called Nikon about getting it repaired since the warranty should have been for a year. It seems that the company that shipped it, Fast Ship Direct, is not an authorized Nikon dealer so the warrant is void. On top of that, it is old lens model and the Nikon rep had to see if parts were actually still available to repair it, they were available and it would cost $240 to repair it! Since I already paid $300 for an old version of a lens, I will not get it fixed and from now on go to a camera dealer and buy directly so I know I am buying a lens that is current and has a warranty!

Very much enjoying this lens
I purchased my lens as "used", because it was listed in that section, but it was actually new in the box, having been separated from a kit. I have already had so much fun experimenting with the lens on my D80 Nikon. I had planned to just play around with it and take pictures to view and delete, but I keep getting "keeper" photos instead. The only downside is that the fun with this lens has me now already wanting to move on to an 18-200, so I can have an even fuller range of flexibily--such as being able to focus in on something like a as a squirrel in a tree, and then turn right around and take a shot calling for wide angle. I realize that the 18-200 lens is heavier, so if I do get one at some point, I imagine I would still opt for this lens when I want to be carrying a bit less weight--or in situations not calling for the higher degree of zoom. I have been enjoying photography off and on for many years, but am still in the "enthusiest" category, so not tuned in to fine details such as minute variations in sharpness, and such. All I can say for sure is that I find this lens to be delightful in the flexibility and spontaneity it offers, along with good results, including with hand held longer zoom shots, even in overcast situations, thanks to the VR assist,
