Durable
Very durable and easy to use. Very versatile for projects. Instead of always using my drills these make a quick and easy hole to start a screw etc on my wood working projects.

They are small and light weight
I kinda expected them to be bigger and chunkier but they work well and I was able to drill multiple holes and increase the size of the holes easily.

Recommended by a Nobel laureate
Robert Shiller, winner of a Nobel award in economics, praised the simplicity and low cost of the gimlet. Who am I to disagree? I had to try them. Well, they weren't so cheap as Shiller claimed (I think economists call that "inflation") and frankly they don't work quite as well as he claimed (I think that is called "economists don't know jack about carpentry"). But they can penetrate softish wood to make a decent hole. They are not so great at making a pilot hole part way through a board because they don't clear the chips well. They wobble a lot as you start the hole, and they can hurt your fingers - gloves help a lot.

Very useful for figuring out how thick an RV wall or floor is
The initial portion ~self-drills until the threaded portion is no longer "in" wall or floor material. Then there is a smooth portion behind the threaded portion. One can push and pull the gimlet while the smooth portion is "in" the wall material, and the pulling will stop (the "stop" can be felt) when the threaded portion touches the other side of the wall or floor material.

Love these!
I needed a way to do some minor carpentry living off-grid and these gimlets work beautifully to predrill for nails or screws.

When you don't have a drill handy for a pilot hole.
I saw these on the site and had to try them. Glad I did! They are so handy to have.

Nice bu not perfect
These work pretty well, but would benefit from having the threads extend up the shaft a bit more.
