Q: How long could the ink last on the shelf? I would like to have backup cartridges but don't want it drying out.

I would guess 6 months at least. When I first got my printer, I stocked up on ink. I went a little overboard and by the time I tried to use them they were dried up. However, I decided to try running them under warm water for a minute or two. I made sure I didn't get the the contacts wet. I also dried the whole thing off very well and made sure it was completely dry before loading into the printer. It did allow me to print, however I would only try this at your own risk. Inserting a wet cartridge might wreck the printer.

Q: Should i put both the black cartridges in the black and tricolor slot? the paper alignment is not working with the e-z black cartridge in one.

I don't think so. Tricolor cartridge is for tricolor slot. Black cartridge is only to the black. Maybe you should unplug the printer and then plug it back in. That might help. I had no problem with this ink.
