I’ve been struggling to find a good mulch to lay down around my roses. My goal was to help retain moisture from watering and keep down weeds, but also allow sufficient airflow and pH levels to fight mildew and black spot. I’ve tried wood chips, fern fronds, hay, and compost with varying degrees of failure. Then I learned about pine needles/pine straw and gave this product a try. It’s been two weeks and already there is a marked improvement in moisture retention and a reduction in weeds cropping up between the plants. The powdery mildew and black spot that I had finally gotten under control from earlier this year have shown no signs of returning. And the one box I purchased had enough pine straw to put a nice mat around twenty rose plants, including the open ground between plants. The product was very well packed in the box, arranged in two columns with circular sections of long needles that were easy to separate and fluff out for even coverage. It gives a natural yet uniform look to the rose bed that does not get blown around with the wind or disturbed by squirrels. I expect it will compact down when the rains return and make a nice foundation for winter mulching as well.

I’d probably rate this around 3.5 stars overall. The pine straw itself was perfectly fine and looked nice once spread out, so I don’t really have complaints about the actual product quality. My main issue was the advertised coverage. I don’t feel like the 100 sq ft estimate was very realistic unless you’re putting down an extremely thin layer. I ended up needing more than expected to get decent coverage in my garden beds. If you go into it expecting less coverage than advertised, it’s still a decent product, but I do think the listing is a little optimistic on the amount.

My flowers and bushes are doing great since I started using this. It's good to use it over winter to protect your plants and bushes. I use it during the summer too. It keeps the weeds down.

I’m experimenting with different mulches during this terrible summer heat. This product was one of two types of pine needle mulch that I’ve tried so far (the other brand was purchased from my local tractor supply store and came in baled form). The quality was impressive in terms of being a box of long, well formed needles packed carefully. Compared to what I got from tractor supply (bales of broken bits of all kinds of stuff beside pine needles) there was no comparison. The jury is out for the moment as to how the pine performs against oat straw (what I normally use and still have in some of my beds) but I found myself thinking that if someone wanted dried pine needles that are in good shape and decorative this product would meet that need.

This was such a great idea! In the past, I had to drive down to Home Depot, go talk to the guy in the big truck in the parking lot, put a bunch of straw in my car and dirty it up, leave the guy, a tip, haul the straw all the way back up to the terrace, and it took so much time and was such an aggravation. Now that I know I can just order a box of straw that is delivered to my place and all I need to do is spread the straw on my terrace patio, this is so much better so much more efficient, I will be ordering this box of straw going forward! The packaging in the box was super neat, super clean, and it covered a lot of territory on my yardette. I am so grateful that these people provide the service, a real quality of life change for the better!
