Q: Do you have to have this control in order for the lights to work? Or does this just allow you to customize the lighting?

The RGB controller is completely optional, and yes, it allows you to customize the lighting. Our Color Optix series of speakers do come with a harness which allow you to hard wire one color. Thanks for your interest in Rockford Fosgate!
