solid product
This kit is excellent, used it to mount a couple of scopes off the bat and was surprised at how much material had to be removed from rings for a proper mount, absolutely essential on large caliber guns - the torque driver system is great, no more damaged screws, this is the main reason I bought the kit, if you look at buying the torque driver separately the value of this kit is immediately obvious, the kit has a torque chart that comes with it but it only includes related torque data for 3 screw sizes, it should have a little more data, but this is the 3 primary data sets related to screws you will commonly encounter when mounting scopes, just wish it had the extra data for more versatility, but that is where a net search yields data quickly and easily - the torque driver works perfectly with the wheeler 89 p driver set, this is a crucial piece of gear if you are turning a wrench on guns, well worth the price paid for the kit! - mine had a smooth bar, not grooved as previous reviews had mentioned, bar functioned flawlessly and leaves a great finished product. - mine came with a plastic case (kind of a downer since I ordered a plastic case separately after reading some reviews that said it didn't come with it, so in the end I got 2 cases -(eh, not a big deal, case sells separately for 6-10 bones) - Kit works great, but I wish the kit came with a stud for a power drill attachment - the end cap of the lapper bar is threaded - would be easy to rough the rings, then follow up hand lapping if you could rough it out with power drill, would save you a lot of time - but hey can't hold it against the kit since it is not advertised with one, just think it would be a little extra value to an already great kit. - wish list aside I still give the kit a 5/5, performs exactly as advertised, excellent fit finish and function, as well as value - wheeler has obviously followed feedback related to its product and made several upgrades and revamps to fine tune this kit to an optimal state.

A Must Have Scope Mounting Kit!

For proper scope mounting, this tool is required!
This kit is a must have if you are going to mount a decent quality scope on your rifle. If you are spending less than $100 on a scope, you may not get any benefit from this. But if you're buying a decent scope, this kit allow you to properly mount it. It takes an hour or so to mount a scope with this - less time if you've done a few. The only reason for four stars is that there are two levels included (so you can get your cross hairs level as they need to be), and neither one is accurate (reads different when you turn it around). If Wheeler Engineering wil replace these at no cost, I'll see if I can change my rating to five stars. Otherwise, the kit is excellent. The torque driver screw driver - they cal it a FAT wrench - really works well, and although a lot of us have lived many years without using one of these, this tool is really helpful if you are doing precision work. And there are many other uses for it besides just scope mounting. The other components are just what you need to insure that when you mount a scope, that it is not undue stressed - if your rings are out of align (they will damn near ALWAYS not be in perfect alignment unless they are single base system), and that the scope does not move (it can move if it is mounted without the rings being aligned). Of course, this is all if you are concerned with precision. If all you do is plink beer cans, you probably don't want this. If you hunt, you owe it to your quarry to be an ethical hunter and get the best shot placement possible. If you take shots over 100 yards, then you need this. Be sure to mark your ring halves before you start - I suggest scratching tiny marks in your ring tops - F and R for front and rear - because you want to put them back in the same position or your efforts were somewhat wasted - and if you use a felt permanent marker, that will wash or wear off when you go to clean the grit from your rings. The lapping compound is 220 grit - fairly course and grease based. It really isn't that messy, but you don't want to do this while sitting on your living room couch. There are several good and several bad videos on YouTube that show how to use this tool. Check them out if you can. I like to cover my rifle in Saran wrap (or Peel and Stick Saran wrap if you have that) just to keep any of this stuff from getting inside the action. If you're careful though, it doesn't drip or splatter. And there is a tube of threadlocker included. Definitely need to use this on all scope mounting screws if you don't already have some. I didn't open the included bottle as I've got others, but I'm sure it is ok stuff. One last off topic tip - the lapping compound is also useful if you have a phillips or slotted screw that you can't remove because the bit slips out. You can put some of this stuff on the tip of the screwdriver and it may give you enough grip to back out the screw.

Shoot better! This is a must-have!
Wow, this is a prime example of "you don't know what you don't know". All of my rifles were have been sighted in for years/decades and were mounted ensuring proper eye relief and crosshairs were level. Figured that was good enough, and it was for the most part as most of my hunting rifles were deadly at 100-200 yards with some shooting sub-MOA groups. Recently decided I wanted to start shooting long range and that is when I ran into issues. Upon some research, came across this mounting/lapping kit and figured I'd give it a "shot". Come to find out every single one of my scopes was out of whack to varying degrees. All were corrected with the lapping bars and the results are amazing. Couldn't be more impressed with this kit and highly recommend it for any avid shooter out there and wish I would have purchased this years ago. Side note - the torque wrench comes with a calibration certification as well and seemed to be spot when I was using it between 15 and 30lbs. PSS - previous review mentioned he thought he had a used kit because the Loctite bottle had a burn mark on it...mine had that as well but was clearly a new kit. Odd that they all seem to have the same burn mark in the same spot and had I not read the previous review, it would have made me question it as well.

Do folks REALLY need to lap scope rings in this day and age? Maybe . . .
It works great and I highly recommend the torque wrench. Very easy to use. I can only assume the setting is accurate. My biggest concern is whether I really need to lap scope rings in this day and age. Aren't scopes and rings so precision machined that is is unnecessary? One thing i can say to answer my own question is that I have now lapped two pair of rings and there does seem to be a tiny bit more coming off one part of the inside of the rings . . . so maybe it really IS necessary . . . or maybe I just have them cock-eyed in the rail. Anyway, it makes me feel like I know what I am doing and it is not very difficult to do so I am glad I made the purchase and I'm going to continue to lap my scopes. For anyone who hasn't already made the purchase, I'd recommend talking to a couple guys who mount scopes for a living (call your local gun shops) and see if they lap the scopes. If not, save some $ and just buy the torque wrench.
