Apache Spark in 24 Hours, Sams Teach Yourself

I found out I would be working with Spark on an upcoming job so I picked up this book. I am an experienced SW dev and systems integrator and had already installed Spark and Python prior to getting this book. That being said, this book's methodical approach from the basic constructs to the more involved and specialized areas was very well done and organized in a logical progression (tho I did skip around a bit as I am not using AWS or SQL, for now). I was writing my own Spark jobs within a couple of days (using Python) using the Spark shell and stand alone Python scripts. You will of course be accessing the online Spark documentation and API reference documentation to augment your coding and understanding, but, I thought this was an excellent book to get up to speed in a very short time. This book is by no means comprehensive (there is no way any one book can be), but after working thru this book, I am very well prepared to branch out and move onto more advance Spark topics. Highly recommended if you are already involved with software (i.e. a techie), but new to Spark.

The book has covered a wide variety of topics on Spark and has good introductions on Hadoop HDFS and YARN. It serves as a comprehensive tutorial on all the important Spark concepts. I would have liked more advanced use cases and more tips on performance tuning.

I think this book may be slightly out of date already as the Hadoop common binaries are no longer a part of the current release of Spark. I'm trying to install Spark on windows and am running into problems with the installation chapter, specifically the portion where is says "Download the Hadoop common binaries necessary to run Spark compiled for Windows x64 from hadoop-common-bin." :/.I checked the book website and there is no updated information on how to complete the installation.Once I am able to install Spark and get through this book I'll update my review. I found a few sites with the info and it seems like windows installation is a whole hour or 2 on its own.

Great book for beginners! Easy to follow.

I’ve caught 4 spelling errors and I’m only 1/3 of the way through the book. Otherwise, the content is great.

good book for Python enthusiasts and data scientists, only Spark book I know of which focuses on PySpark

Please double check the price listed on Amazon before you buy it. Price printed on the back is 54.99, but i paid 59.14 for it. Feeling bad...

O livro é excelente como os demais da séria 24 hours. Como resalva do ponto de vista pessoal eu esperava uma abordagem maior da linguagem Scala no lugar do Python que o autor utilizou, entretanto não compromete de forma alguma o conteúdo.

Muy bien explicado con ejercicios claros (map reduce) y todas las funciones que tiene spark. Me gustaría que tuviera más ejemplos en scala pero lo recomiendo para los que empiezan utilizando python.
