Great for any instument
i love this book/cd package. My playing ability is growing much faster since i started using it. The examples range from easy to pretty hard but with a metronome and practice everything is playable no matter your playing level. There's nothing too complicated except for the transcribed dream theater solos which are not on the cd. The cool thing is every exercise gives you ideas for navigating the fretboard, different scales, and keys. Once you learn an example, your encouraged to use your imagination and expand on it The book really opens up your creativity. You will need a metronome and patience. The book is motivational.

Definately NOT for a beginner.
I've seen it elsewhere in the reviews, and this statement is correct. If you're just starting out in guitar (less than 1 year experience), this is not the book for you.Ideally the guitarist reading this book should have at least a basic working knowledge of the 7 basic modes (and all the types of chords, scales, and associated arpeggios) , circle of 5ths, and alternate picking techniques. The book has a ton of great exercieses ( a LOT of chromatic runs) which will help your improve dexterity and 'cleanliness' in picking.A HUGE bonus is the CD that's included in the back with like 100 tracks, you can actually hear the examples in the book as they are supposed to sound. If you, as a guitarist, have been stuck in a rut, or are looking to delve into more exotic and cool song structures and such, definately check out this book! There is so much in this book. I think the best approach is to take it 1 week at a time, and cover a chapter per week. That's what I'm going to attempt!I myself have been a practicing guitarist since 1996.Kyle[URL]

One of the best instructional books ever written
I don't care what style you play, John's sensibility, method, and suggestions will make you a better player all-around.

John Petrucci has some really great advice. Its a must have
I have been playing for 30 years and even majored in Classical Guitar back in college. I played live pro and taught at a Music Store I owned for several years. Even with all of that under my belt, I am still learning and the advice and exercises in this book are invaluable. Start early and do it right. Learn to read music at least in the first position and follow the techniques and habits that John lays our in this book. I am going through it now and love the different exercises. There is so much to learn even if you had 2 lifetimes there would still be more to learn. This is great stuff. Thank you JP!

JP is a legend
John Petrucci is arguably one of the most gifted progressive and/or metal guitarist ever to grace a stage, and yet he is humble about his abilities and is willing to share what he has learned over the years. His tips for practice and how to turn anything into a great guitar lesson is a benefit to any guitarist whether they are able to reach for the heights he has attained or those who need any nugget of knowledge to help them get over whatever hurdle they are facing with the instrument.

Challenging
There are some prerequisites to use this book effectively:1. Get a metronome and use it.2. Be patient. I thought I could rip through these exercises one after another but I find that I'm spending several sessions on each exercise to reach the speed and accuracy I want. You really need to memorize the exercises so you can practice them frequently.3. Set aside the time to concentrate on this book. An hour a day is probably enough to move forward through the lessons. It gets harder as you turn the pages.4. Resolve. This is a challenging program that Petrucci has put together. It would be easy to put it aside and do something that is more fun. However, my playing has IMPROVED! I go back to songs I had attempted in the past and find I can rip through passages I stumbled on before. The book works.

A Must for aspiring guitarists and Dream Theater enthusiasts
I think this is much more beneficial than the Rock Discipline video. John explains his exercises clearly and they are very constructive. I've been playing guitar for some 13 years before I picked this up, and even though I've only spent a couple weeks with this book (and a metronome I just as recently bought), I have noticed some improvement in my playing.

super livre bon cd simple d'utilisation
Bon ouvrage lorsqu'on comprend l'anglais.
