Should I keep this on 24/7? I cant really find a definitive answer.

Sure you can. Ive have mine for little over half a year and i've left mine on 24/7, only turning it off for water changes at things like that. These are made to run a very long time continuously. Hope this helps!

What exactly does the check valve do? And, is it strong enough to push air through a 12 light changing air filter?

Check valve uses to protect your air pump by preventing aquarium water from back siphoning during a power outage. This pump is not strong enough for your need. you could try this one ASIN: B072F2NTCY. Thank you.

does this unit vibrate? and how physically large is it? Thanks

The unit does vibrate but it has feet to keep it from being loud. It's about the size of the palm of your hand. I have mine sitting on top of my filter and it fits perfectly.

Can you adjust the air flow. I feel its too strong for my mini bow 5 gal tank with single betta?

No air flow adjustment, but the stone is small.
