For Rosetta Stone or Babbel Users
The book is perfect if you’ve gone through a bit of introductory Irish in a Rosetta Stone-like setting and need some clarification. I can’t speak to other purposes, but I thought it was straightforward and helpful.

Helps with the language details
Helps fill in the gaps that are missed by Duo Lingo.

Perfect book for relearning Irish.
My husband is from Ireland. He was moved away from his home when he was 8, so it's been well over 20 years since he's spoken his native tongue. He remembers quite a bit, but not as much as he'd like. This gift has proven to be the perfect present for him to relearn his native language. Very easy to follow along- even a child could do it!

Great little book
I bought this little book after I started learning Irish on Duolingo. It is the perfect supplement to that course because the book helps to explain what they don't (Duolingo offers no explanation for the language usage. You learn simply by repetition.) I know I need more books than just this one but it's a great start! BTW - if you're learning Irish and want to try to understand it as spoken, watch the movie called "The Quiet Girl". It's in Irish with English subtitles. I can pick out a few words but it's not easy.

I got it mixed up with another book.
When I ordered this, I was confusing it with another book I had used years ago and liked very much. (It turns out that book was called Speak Irish Now, a bigger, more expensive workbook loaded with exercises.) That being said, this book, which is quite economical for a language book, is probably not bad as an overview. From its organization, it looks like it will be a good review of structures, but perhaps a little short on exercises for me at my basic level.

Just what I needed to make sense of Irish grammar!
Although English is spoken in Ireland, I decided I wanted to learn the language for an upcoming trip. I've been using Duolingo, which is a great app, but I've been having difficulty with the rules of grammar as the app doesn't really explain the why...buiochos le Dia (thank goodness in Irish) for James Joyce and his Step-by-Step Irish Grammar book - It is just what I needed! Highly recommend if you want to learn Irish as it is a MUST-HAVE!

I did not have high hopes for this book as it is self-published (and is James Joyce the author's real name?), but actually it is excellent. It written clearly and unlike First Steps in Irish it goes to considerable pains to explain the grammar. Another plus is that it gives the pronunciation of the words (I appreciate this is controversial and some teachers insist that the only way to master the pronunciation is to hear the word said, but as a hard of hearing person I found this feature useful). I have two slight quibbles. It is short (there are only eleven core lessons) and a book twice the length would have been excellent, but it does cover the basics almost to the same extent as First Steps in Irish. And it would have been useful to have had a glossary of words at the back. This book is thus an excellent preparation for studying Colloquial Irish which does rather throw the reader into the deep end. All in all, this is a good book for adult beginners and much better than First Steps in Irish.

I have taught Irish for some 25 years to beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. This book is full of mistakes and inaccurate information. It is a waste of your money. A better buy would be the more recent Teach Yourself Irish books, the Complete Course, or Irish Grammar , or the Myles Dillon and Donncha O Croinin book from the 1950's.

Kompakt mit den wichtigsten grammatikalischen und Ausprachepunkten für den Anfang. Leider sehr dünnes Buch, also wirklich nur für einen schnellen Einstieg geeignet. Dafür aber wirklich zu empfehlen.

Like the interaction and lessons. Do not like several words that need correct pronunciation, with no assistance provided.
