Surprisingly durable powerful little thing
Perfect replacement for a Craftsman tiller I’d had for years. Easy starting, stopping. The reverse gear is essential.

A 3 star tiller but I added a star for low price
1-yr update: I'm on my 5 or 6th tank of gas, and the tiller still starts on the first pull and runs great. I've broken 2 valve stems, and flattened a third tube. The wheel will occasionally move inside the tire, offsetting the valve stem from its port in the wheel and the valve breaks, or the tube rubs against rough steel on the rim and pops. I used a file on the inside of the rim and make there is no debris to pop the tube inside, and inflate the tube to a high psi when in use to help keep it and the tire from slipping inside the rim. Also, tubes are <$3 each on Amazon, and I keep spares. An irritation, for sure, but a lot worse could be wrong (and isn't) at this point on a 3star tiller.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've used a full tank of gas already since receiving the tiller last week. Arrived in a wooden crate about a week after ordering. The crate had some damage on arrival but the tiller inside was without a scratch. Instructions for assembly were easy to understand (no "engrish") and all the tools came with. There was a spec of steel that did not mill off during manufacture preventing one of the wheels from slipping onto the axle that I simply filed down with a metal nail file, and the fuel line was not connected from the tank to the fuel valve that I couldn't remedy. I called the Champion service support (in California) toll free number and they immediately called ahead to a local small engine repair nearby my home and the mechanic there was able to connect it in seconds.Pros: Much lower cost compared to similar items on Amazon, and has a slightly larger engine. Excellent printed material for assembly and operation. Above average customer support. Starts on first pull. Simple controls and very easy to use. Tilled through my clay rocky soil effortlessly.Cons: Apparently, poor quality control at the manufacturer (see above). Only operates in forward and reverse, the right handle control is fwd, the left is reverse. And the tines only operate in one direction (reverse) when tilling (the tines go forward only while the drive is in reverse.) Though the throttle is variable, idle and run are really the only options you effectively have.Overall, a great value for good rear tine tiller.

Defective Upon Arrival
The media could not be loaded. Unpack-aged the tiller and assembled all parts. There was some slight damage to the right control arm but nothing I couldn't live with. After adding all fluids and transporting it to the garden, started on the 2nd pull. The only problem was a loud knocking from the motor. Shut it off and started the claim procedure with Champion directly. What a colossal fail on their part. Jump through this hoop, stand on your head, part the Atlantic. They actually wanted me to drive 4 hours one way to a service center to have it evaluated. I sent them video of it running, not sure why they thought an in person would make a difference (it was an obvious motor defect, manufactured in 2020 at the height of covid). Ever try calling Champion Power Equipment? Estimated hold time is 1.5 hours. Thank goodness Amazon stood behind their warranty and refunded my money. I used to like CPE. Not anymore. I still have not received a follow up email after 10 days.

Great Tiller
I have now had this tiller for 3 months and have used it several times making garden patches and food plots. This is a great machine. Lots of power and very sturdy build. Assembly was straight forward and took about 30 minutes. Everything you need to get it up and running is shipped with it (except gas). I was a little hesitant to buy this online, but am really glad I took the chance now.The only problem I ran into was with the shipper. The crate was handled very badly and arrived cracked open. It had been dropped hard enough that the tiller had broken loose from the internal supports inside the crate. But the components were packaged so well and it was made of such heavy metal components that all pieces were intact and still assembled easily. Started easily.this item was available at other online sellers for about $150 more than Amazon's final price. It is comparable with other tillers that I looked at that cost up to twice as much more. Would definitely recommend this tiller and would buy again.

best deal on a rear tine tiller !
After researching all the rear tine tillers on amazon, I had initially settled on the southland, I had the unit in my cart and ready to buy . somehow the champion version popped up on my page. Upon further comparison, I came to the conclusion , the '' champ'' was built in the same factory ( its only obvious looking at the two , as well as the powermate) and purchased the champion at a much cheaper price. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the packaging and the unit itself. however , I had initial problems with the tires breaking the beads on the rims during sharp turns. After some frustrations, this was finally rectified by pulling the tubes and foam filling the tires ( I used home depot expanding foam) and then running screws into the rim edge to lock the rims to the tires ... this is what the factory should have done in the first place ... no worries about flats or separation ever. other than that , this unit works fantastic ! tilled my 1 acre property in about 6 hours. no issues whatsoever and I do think there are some beneficial differences between the southland and the champion. one is, the champion has a larger ( 212cc) engine vs (196cc) and the tines measure 12 1/2 inches ( they are differently shaped also). again, other than the initial tire issue, has been a fantastic tiller.
