The clarity is strong; I can easily spot animals like rabbits from over 100 yards and even objects are clearly seen. Received this as a gift - I returned this even though it worked reasonably well to good. (for a very low cost in my opinion) You definitely can see at night in complete darkness for a quite an acceptable amount of distance, and in "some" light without internal IR light turned on. Well then, what's the issue. Well, for "all" of the purposes I want a night vision device, this "simply isn't the right type" for me.One, even on low, the display emits too much light and temporarily reduces both my eyes night vision.Two, even on low display brightness, this device lights me up dramatically, even from a great distance away and I don't want to have to use a hood. I simply can't be silhouetted if I'm looking for creatures at night.The device works surprisingly well. Other than the "way it works," (display) I would have kept it.Any negatives? Only one... It was too easy to inadvertently hit the "take picture" button for me. I did feel with continued use I would get used to it's position.I really liked it and almost kept it anyway, but I just didn't think I'd use it enough as it's designed "for my intended use." At this price point it was hard to return it though. Again, I kept debating on keeping it. In the end, I simply am going to "bite the cost bullet" and purchase an IR monocular.
