Yes they are speakers. To have good sound you would need subwoofers. The speakers are midrange and higher. Using an amp is a gimme. I use to different amps, one for the array and the other for the subs.

How do you hook up the passive sub to the array speaker?

Go from the amp to sub then piggy back to the array.
