Love it
I use this almost every day to add to the music I'm listening to and singing in the car. It goes with so many songs. The sound is great. Absolutely worth the money. Size is perfect, fits in my hand well and is easy to store. Has lasted a long time and seems like it'll keep lasting. Feels cheap because it's so light, but that's definitely not a bad thing. Works really well. Amazing purchase.

Medium volume was too quiet for my psych rock band.
I got the medium volume shaker. It has a nice sound and constructed as should be expected, but it is just a little too quiet for my band. I also have a "loud" dual shaker from Latin Percussion and that one is extremely loud, a bit too loud.I guess the next step would be to get the Loud Meinl to compare, but that seems excessive at this point.

Loud One is Really Loud, Soft One is Really Soft
Meinl overs these shakers in three "volume" levels (red, black, and silver cases) designated soft, medium, and loud. I have all three. This silver model has very sharp-edged pellets inside, and with two shaker tubes makes a lot of noise. I am confident it would cut through well in a live playing situation. I have found that it tends to be a bit much in more "unplugged" settings, where the shaker is meant to be more subtle. The red "soft" version feels like it has sand or something really gentle inside. It has a more diffuse sound that sets a more indistinct beat. The medium model is somewhere in between. All three Meinl shakers take a bit of practice to develop a clean sound. Unlike the egg-type shakers, the amount of area that the internal pellets can cover in the two tubes is much larger, and therefore one's hand movements have to be more intentional and controlled to keep all the pellets marching in step and creating a consistent and clean sound. It's not a problem once the issue is recognized. In a more intimate setting, especially if a microphone is being used, these Meinl shakers may be too much, and an egg shaker may work better. I have all at my disposal, and it's nice to have the choice. Overall, if I had to pick only one of the Meinl units, I would probably pick the medium one (black). But I would also have an egg shaker with me just in case.

Love the sound of this shaker...
A couple of months ago, my "toy" bag (the duffle bag I carry all my hand percussion accessories in) disappeared after a gig... I had bought another cheaper shaker, and it just wouldn't do. I've become very accustomed to the sound of this one, so I sent the other back and ordered this one.
