Dependable and a long term investment.
This unit has never let me down. It’s on its tenth year of being in my 1 ton extended wheelbase van. It almost exclusively runs on DC batteries powered by solar panels. It stays in that van through the hottest summers and coldest winters with the van parked outside. The only downside is a lack of numerical temperature settings. Just a dial that clockwise is colder and the other way less cold. Understand mine is 10 years old and they may have added that feature but don’t see mention of that feature. In order to know the internal temperature I must have a digital thermometer with a remote probe to know the current temperature and adjust the knob accordingly. For something of this cost and quality I think a thermostatic control and temperature display should be in the design.

Wow great product, added to my 40ft boat as when cruising the fridge/freezer Is too small for many days under way this adds 3 times the freezer space to what we had before and is extremely energy efficient averaging approximately 1.2 amps per hour on freeze in Florida. I have a complex solar system and can keep track of power in and out to my battery bank Quite accurately The units switches automatically from AC to DC power just like my refrigerator and is nearly silent to run. Cools down very quickly and with an adjustment to the thermostat could be a refrigerator instead of a freezer. This is not a light weight plastic Chinese made piece of junk but a heavy duty freezer. This is made for rough outback conditions and will last a very long time with the minimum amount of care.As always you get what you pay for, with a little research you will find that this item is head and shoulders above the rest.

final update after one season of camping
Please read all the way for inital and interim reviews. After 1 full spring/summer/fall season including a 2 week straight stint in Hokaido I can honetsly say that the engel units have exceeded all of my expectations. not once have they failed me in the last year, and they even operated down until the battery was at 11.5 volts with nary a whimper. plugging them in via the a/c side presented no problms either, the units worked well regardless of input votage. the 60 liter did eventually start to frost up right around the front of the unit close to the latchs, however I attribute this to my children constantly opening and closeing it looking for snacks (they are like real life Yogi Bears looking for a picnic basket).units are easy to clean, robust in design and bullet proof, not once have I worried about a LP fridge fire since I installed them, and they do not have the issues that a converted home unit has IRT voltages, or "level" of the trailer. since they run directly off of the 12 volt system, I do not have to worry if my inverter can power them (even though it could) and I have none of the associated power losses from converting form 12 VDC to 120 VAC.they are heavy, the 60 liter does make a little noise, but not as bad as some would say, and I feel that a couple of sound deadning sheets could totaaly solve this issue, and they are no kidding expensive for the size, but quality costs, end of story.I would highly reccommend this to any van camper, travel trailer/5th wheel or OTR trucker for use.I bought two of the engel units, the 45 liter and the 60 liter to replace a 70 liter dometic 3 way in my camper. First impressions, after installing the units under the rear bunk bed (removed drawers and remade bed frame so that it swings up and out of the way "cofin rack" style) I fused and hardwired the units into my campers 12 volt system1. power draw is lower than reported. initial start up and chill down period is what the specs are reffering to, after desired temp is reached unit cycles off and on and for the 45 liter unit amp draw is 1.4 amps @ 12.7 VDC and drops to less than 1 amp after initial startup. the 60 liter is a bit higher at 2.9 startup and dropped to 2.2 amps @ 12.7 vdc. as battery voltage dropped amperage increased proportionally.with two 200 ah batteries and two 240 watt solar panels I could not run my batteries dead. thought I tried.the 45 liter unit froze a quart ziplog bag of water in 4 hours. I did not test the 60 liter in this fashion as I plan on using it as a fridge.2. noise, yes get over it, its a compressor driven unit designed for 12 volt use in rough country. Not a super duper whamo deluxe (insert name of favorite appliance) designed for in the house, where size is not a constraint, and you can engineer in more dampening and sounds absorbtion materials.3. Cost lets just say the wife does not know, and thank god for tax returns.4. build quality overall impression is a serious no nonsense unit.5. no temp gauge is inconvienient, but I feel that with use the prefferred temp dial settings will become apparent with experience6. it works, no worries about running out of propane, or the propane pilot getting blown out, or the need for a genset, lastly Engel has units out there still in service that are 25+ years old. I saw one on a camping trip that was 16 years old, beat to heck the owner told me "to date, I have only replaced the gasket twice since purchase" If mine lasts that long then the cost will not seem so expensive.UPDATE:So in preparation for an overland expedition trip to Hokaido, I ran the engel units for 3 weeks in my camper in the driveway with various perishible items in them. I did not use my home fridge during this time frame. Here are my notes:45liter unit is being used as a freezer... a setting of 3 was adequate for general freezer use. no items spoiled and not much frost buildup.60 liter unit was used as fridge, initially I had it set at 2 and accidentally semi froze some eggs, turned it down to about 1.5 and temp is steady without freezing foods. Nothing spoiled during the 3 weeks including bacon, mayo, milk etc.solar panels have kept battery bank charged during this time frame with battery bank never dropping below 80% SOC at that only on one 24 hour period of rainy day with heavy overcast.draw, engle 40 liter & 60 liter reefer & fridge. Occasional LED lights and fan tastic vent roof vent fan.two 240 watt panels with tristarr MPPT controller and 400 Ah battery bank.
